R21

We have supplied the high-performance LED streetlighting solutions for the South African National Roads Agency Limited’s R21 freeway portion that passes through the Tshwane and Ekurhuleni street lighting maintenance corridors within Gauteng, South Africa. The project forms part of SANRAL’s ongoing initiative to replace ageing high-pressure sodium luminaires with modern LED technology that improves lighting performance, enhances visibility and supports long-term energy savings.

The installations cover two sections of the R21, between the Olifantsfontein Interchange and Moonlight Road Overpass and shortly after the Nellmapius Interchange northwards towards the N1/R21 (Flying Saucer) Interchange. As one of Gauteng’s important transport routes, the R21 carries significant daily traffic and plays a key role in connecting commuters, freight and regional economic activity.

The LEDLUME streetlight was selected for this project due to its proven performance, excellent lighting uniformity and suitability for demanding road and freeway applications. Designed and manufactured in South Africa, the luminaire offers the benefit of local support, reliable availability and a solution developed for local operating conditions.

By replacing 2 x 600W high-pressure sodium luminaires, the new lighting solution delivers a more energy-efficient alternative while meeting the stringent lighting design criteria and site conditions. The luminaires are also lighting management ready, enabling future integration with smart control systems that can further optimise energy use and maintenance planning.
