Solar Lighting Highmast Solution for City Power Johannesburg

BEKA Schréder is supplying the solar lighting highmast solution for City Power Johannesburg’s project to supply communities with lighting which is independent of the power grid.

City Power Johannesburg is a state-owned power utility, wholly owned by the City of Johannesburg, whose responsibilities include buying electricity from power producers and supplying it to the public, and installing and maintaining the electrical infrastructure in the city of Johannesburg. It supplies electricity to 3.2 million people in the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Area.

The Municipality needed an off-grid solar lighting solution for the communities of Soweto, Lenasia, Eldorado Park, Finetown, Mogale City, Diepsloot, Heidelberg and Emfuleni. The vandalism resulting from power supply interruptions has wreaked havoc in these communities, causing crime levels to increase and compromise the safety of the residents. With this solar highmast solution, lighting is now being provided to the communities, independent of the power grid.

Solar highmasts create a safe, deter crime and enable the community of Johannesburg to continue with their informal business even after the sun has set.
